Sometimes I struggle to decide how much detail to include, knowing that some of you will be interested in particular aspects of a story while others will not.

Alwin very interesting little book that opened my eyes ed a number of ways, and helped me to understand part of why I’m not a very good traveler. He is most insightfully expressive with regard to perspectives and perceptions, which, lucky for the reader, penetrate most portions of the novel. The very personal contemplation — de Botton’s I-experiences — also don’t work to best effect here.

At the end of hours of train-dreaming, we may feel we have been returned to ourselves – that is, brought back into contact with emotions and ideas of importance to us.

What I got was a book of two halves. But for me there were few highlights, the chapter on Van Gogh the only real exception. He just seems like an altogether smart, together, sweet guy. In five sections, de Botton moves from Departure to Motives to Landscape to Art to Return, offering for each but the last two reflective pieces, such as “On the Sublime”.
