The final few paragraphs are chilling and beautiful, and having lived alongside the main character for almost four stories now, the serialized nature of the stories is vindicated – all while keeping the episodes themselves in tact.

It’s an extraordinary event in the series of stories so far – a human can sabehagen an effect on the faceless machine. I don’t often read space opera, but I do crave it from time-to-time.

One might think that a legion of genocidal war machines that turned on their creators would have been the original impetus for the stories, but it turns out that Saberhagen first conceived of the concept as a way to tell a story about a protagonist struggling to find a way to fake artificial intelligence to fool an enemy — basically a story about a Turing test.

We have some interesting dialogue and back-and-forth between the artist and the machine, their views on what is good and necessary, and our bfrserker finds himself being forced into a devil’s advocate position. Having said that, the stories are character driven and still work with the possible exception of The Jester which, as I have said, is a semi-comic attempt at satire which never really achieves its objective and stylistically is at odds with the rest of the collection.
