Perhaps his most famous book is Logical Chess: The difficulty level of the book is probably on par with his Most Instructional Games book, so if you enjoyed and got something out of that book, you should have a great time with this one. His books are irviing read for the deep analysis but rather for the unusual games and chess positions, the curious facts and the amusing stories which have become part of chess lore that every chess player in the world now knows even those who have not read his books.

Alphabetical index lists openings and a fair number of variations. This is a truly fun book. Some older forgotten lines of play that you can enjoy, and maybe punish an opponent with. I have found lobros half a dozen endgames where I’ve come up with alternative lines where a win is not forced.

So I remain unconvinced that newer books would necessarily do a better job of teaching this subject. If I decided to play defensively, I would lose a pawn for sure and the game eventually becuase I had only 5 minutes on the clock versus 15 minutes on my opponent’s.

This is a great book, with traps, mostly move games, though likely continuations are sometimes given beyond 20 moves. The games in ‘Twelve’ can be quite subtle in their exactness, which is not very instructive. Since the book is a Libross, and it’s old, it’s written in descriptive notation. More importantly, it’s left up to the reader to determine what factors require which techniques.
Advanced-beginner level, but even a master must be prepared for the traps in his own openings. That isn’t to say that the selection is bad or that the games aren’t instructive and great. So if you already have several collections, you probably do not need this book. Anyone no matter their skill level can benefit from this book.
At our local chess club the Masters give lectures on Thursday nights. At this stage the tactics are the main weapons.
